Reflections in AI Photos: Mirrors, Windows and Wet Streets

A reflection only works when it shows the same scene from a mirrored viewpoint, and that is exactly what AI image models rarely get right on their own. A mirror showing a different outfit, a shop window reflecting an empty street while people are standing there, or wet asphalt with light streaks coming from nowhere: it is one of the fastest ways an otherwise convincing image still reads as fake. Below you will find why that happens, the two physical rules every reflection follows, and how to steer it in your prompt.
Why AI models struggle with reflections
Image models learn what a mirror looks like, not how a mirror works. They generate the scene and the reflection more or less as two separate pieces of image that should resemble each other, instead of deriving the reflection from the scene.
That is not speculation. The researchers behind MirrorVerse (CVPR 2025) write that diffusion models "often fail to fully adhere to physical laws, particularly with effects like shadows, reflections, and occlusions", and that existing models, despite extensive training data, "frequently overlook the nuanced details crucial to authentic mirror reflections" (arXiv:2504.15397). The hardest case turns out to be a subject rotated or shifted relative to the mirror.
The practical lesson: the more prominent the mirror in your frame, the more likely you will need to check it or avoid it.
The two rules every reflection follows
Reflection is predictable, and once you know the two rules you spot errors in about a second.
Rule 1: the angle. On a mirror-like surface, the angle at which light arrives equals the angle at which it leaves, and the incoming ray, the reflected ray and the surface normal all lie in the same plane (Wikipedia, Specular reflection). In practice: if you stand at an angle to a mirror, you do not see yourself, you see whatever sits at the matching angle on the other side. An AI image where someone looks into a mirror from the side and still sees their own face head-on is wrong.
Rule 2: the viewing angle sets the strength. The shallower your angle to a surface, the more mirror-like it becomes. Glass viewed head-on reflects only about 4% of the light, but at a grazing viewing angle the reflection climbs toward full mirroring (Wikipedia, Fresnel equations). That is why a puddle at your feet shows you almost nothing while the same puddle further down the street hands back the entire skyline.
That second rule is the most useful one in practice. If you want a strong reflection, put the camera low and look across the surface instead of down onto it.
How to describe a mirror in your prompt
Do not just state that there is a mirror, state what should be visible in it. Without that second half, the model fills in something of its own.
A workable setup:

That last one helps more than you would expect. A lightly fogged or dusty mirror gives the model room to show less detail, and hides exactly the errors that would otherwise stand out.
Windows, water and wet asphalt
Not every reflective surface asks for the same approach.
- Windows and shopfronts. Two things happen at once here: you look through the glass and you see the street behind you reflected back. Ask for both, for example

What to check before you publish
Run through these four points on your rendered image. They take ten seconds and catch almost everything.
- Do the colours and clothing match? Same outfit, same hair colour, same bag in the mirror as in the scene.
- Does the count match? Two people in frame, two people in the reflection. Missing or extra figures are a classic failure.
- Does the direction match? Text in a mirror should be reversed. A readable logo in a reflection gives the image away immediately.
- Does the light match? The light source in the reflection should be the same one as in the scene, sitting at the mirrored position.
