God rays in AI photos: shaping visible light shafts

God rays, also called volumetric light or crepuscular rays, only show up in your AI image when three things come together: a strong, directional backlight, a medium in the air such as mist, dust, or smoke, and an edge or opening that breaks the light into beams. Ask your model for "god rays" without those three and you usually get a flat, even scene. Below is how to actually summon them, and how to control their direction, color, and density.

What are god rays exactly?

God rays are visible light beams that become visible because light scatters off particles in the air. Without dust, water droplets, or smoke, light is invisible: you only see what it hits, not the path itself. It takes a medium in the air to make that path show up as a distinct shaft.

Two things worth knowing before you prompt:

  • The rays seem to fan out from a single point, but in reality they run almost parallel. That fanning is a perspective effect, just like a straight road appearing to converge in the distance (source: Wikipedia).
  • They also go by god rays, sunbeams, or Jacob's ladder. Models know these terms well, so feel free to use them in your prompt.

The three ingredients for your prompt

Every convincing god ray comes from the same three building blocks. Call them out separately in your prompt:

  1. A directional light source. Put the light behind or slightly behind your subject: "strong backlight", "low sun just outside the frame", or a window or lamp as the source. Frontal light produces no beams.
  2. A medium in the air. No particles, no rays. Add: "atmospheric haze", "morning mist", "dust in the air", "smoke", or "fog". Dose it, don't fill the whole scene.
  3. An opening or edge. Beams form where light passes through a gap: "sunlight through gaps in the trees", "light shafts through a window", "light breaking through the clouds", or "open doorway".

Example prompt: "misty pine forest at dawn, strong backlight, volumetric god rays streaming through the trees, dust in the air, cinematic".

How do you steer direction, color, and density?

Direction follows the light source, color follows the time of day, density follows the amount of medium. Control them separately.

  • Direction. The beams should come from the light source and fall the same way. Describe where the light comes from ("light from the upper left") so the rays stay consistent instead of pointing every which way.
  • Color. Low light at sunrise or sunset is warmer, because the sun then shines through about 40 times as much air as at midday (source: Wikipedia). Ask for "warm orange god rays" for morning or evening, and "cool white light shafts" for crisp, high, or artificial light.
  • Density. Too much mist washes your whole scene into gray. Ask for "subtle" or "light haze" when your subject needs to stay sharp, and keep the beams as an accent, not the main subject.

In video you want the light to feel alive: slowly drifting mist, dust motes floating through the beam, or shafts that gradually strengthen as a cloud moves away. Keep the motion slow, because fast, flickering rays look fake. Describe the motion explicitly, for example "slow drifting haze, dust motes floating through the light beams". Bring a strong still image to life with the video generator, or generate the base first in the photo generator.

Common mistakes

  • Asking for rays without a medium. "God rays" with no mist or dust rarely produces beams. The medium is the condition, not a nice-to-have.
  • Frontal light. Without backlight or side light there is no light path to make visible.
  • Too much haze. A dense veil eats contrast and facial detail. Dose it deliberately.
  • Confusing them with a sunstar. A sunstar is the star shape around a bright point of light, god rays are the beams that travel through the air. Different prompt, different effect.
