Fabric and Sheen in AI Photos: Satin, Leather, Denim

You steer material in an AI photo not by naming the fabric, but by describing how that fabric bounces light back: satin gives an elongated, shifting sheen, leather a soft broad highlight, and denim almost no sheen at all but plenty of visible structure. Write only "satin dress" or "leather jacket" and the model fills in an average, which is how you end up with clothing that looks like painted plastic. Why fabric so often reads as fake in AI images
Image models generate texture as a pattern, not as a surface. They know what denim looks like in a photo, but they do not compute how a woven surface scatters light. Without direction you get fabric with the right colour and the right silhouette, but a uniform sheen across the whole garment.
That is exactly what a viewer notices without thinking about it. Real fabric is glossy in some places and not in others, depending on the fold, the angle and the direction of the fibres. An AI dress that shines evenly everywhere reads as vinyl.
The fix is not stacking more adjectives. It is describing the sheen itself: where it sits, how wide it is, and which way it runs.
Satin and silk: the shine lives in the weave
Satin shines because its threads run long across the surface without crossing. A satin weave is defined by "four or more fill or weft yarns floating over a warp yarn, and four warp yarns floating over a single weft yarn", and those floating threads are what produce the lustre: light is not scattered as much, which results in a stronger reflection (Wikipedia, Satin).
More important for your prompt: those parallel threads make the sheen directional. In computer graphics that is called an anisotropic highlight, used to model surfaces with small parallel grooves or fibres such as brushed metal, satin and hair (Wikipedia, Specular highlight). So the highlight is not a round spot but a stretched band that follows the direction of the fabric.

Denim: structure instead of shine
Denim asks for the opposite of satin: almost no reflection, but clearly visible structure. Denim is technically "a sturdy cotton warp-faced textile in which the weft passes under two or more warp threads", and that twill weave produces the diagonal ribbing that sets denim apart from other cotton (Wikipedia, Denim).
The same weave explains a detail models often miss: because the warp is dyed blue and the weft is left white, one side is dominated by blue threads and the other by white ones. That is why the inside of a pair of jeans is pale. If your render shows a cuff or rolled-up sleeve with a blue inside, it is wrong.
Useful building blocks: diagonal twill texture visible, faded indigo with lighter seams, matte cotton, no sheen, worn at the knees and pocket edges. That last one is the strongest. Wear in the places that genuinely wear out makes denim more believable than any texture description.
Leather: shine without the plastic look
Leather sits between satin and denim, and it goes wrong because "leather" can mean three completely different surfaces. Pick one and say which.

The same fabric looks completely different under a large soft source than under a small hard one. So always describe both.
- Hard, small light (sun, spot, flash) gives sharp, bright highlights. This makes satin and patent leather spectacular, and denim rough and contrasty.
- Soft, large light (overcast, window light, softbox) gives broad, vague highlights. This flattens satin into a dull sheet, but suits suede and worn leather well.
- Raking light (light skimming across the surface) is the best way to make a weave visible. For denim, tweed and knitwear,
raking side light revealing the fabric textureworks better than any fabric adjective.
So combine material and light in one line: black satin dress under a single hard light, elongated highlights along the folds.
What to check before you publish
Four quick checks on your render. They cost ten seconds.
- Does the sheen shift? Shine should change with the fold. An evenly glowing garment is almost always wrong.
- Do the folds follow the body? Fabric falls downwards and gathers at the waist, elbow and knee. Folds that come from nowhere give the image away.
- Does the pattern bend in the fold? A stripe, check or twill rib has to deform along a crease, not run straight over it like a sticker.
- Do the seams and edges hold up? Hems, zips and stitching are where models fail first. Zoom in before you publish.
