What depth of field is (and what bokeh means)
Depth of field is the distance between the nearest and the farthest point in your photo that is still acceptably sharp (according to Wikipedia). Everything outside that zone gradually goes out of focus. How thin that sharp zone is depends, in photography, on three things:
- Aperture (f-number): a small number like f/1.8 gives a shallow depth of field, a large number like f/11 a deep one. The wider the aperture, the less is sharp.
- Focal length: a longer lens, say 85mm, makes the sharp zone thinner than a wide angle does.
- Distance to your subject: the closer you are to your subject, the shallower the depth of field.

How to steer depth of field in your prompt
Name the effect you want with fixed English terms; that's what the models are trained on. Two directions:

As a guideline from photography: roughly f/1.8 to f/2.8 for a portrait with a blurred background, and f/8 to f/11 for a scene where everything should be sharp (Digital Photography School). Note: stopping down further to f/16 or f/22 doesn't make your image sharper. Because of diffraction, a photo actually loses sharpness at those very small apertures (Wikipedia). So "everything sharp" is not the same as "f/22".

Depth of field in AI video
In video, depth of field works just like in photos: a blurred background isolates your character, a deep depth of field keeps the whole scene readable. Common mistakes
